Movie of the 60's or 70's. Who knows the name? Can anyone help me?

It's a movie about a poor girl who is adopted by a nice lady. Originally, she lives in the countryside with an old aunt or the grandmother and doesn't go to school. In the beginning, she finds it hard to adapt to her new life. She has a bird that can't fly. In an attempt to be accepted by her peers, she lets them throw stones at it to death. There is famous 60's actress in it who play the lady who takes the girl in. Unfortunately, I don't know her name.
