Is cursive or calligraphy obsolete?

I remembered that I was in elementary school where the crazy teacher from hell forced all of us to learn to write in cursive. It was so difficult for me I had such a hard time learning how to write many letters and words! (especially those involving Gs). Then I also had to learn calligraphy in middle school and I basically botched it. I never write like that in my life, in fact, I type most of the time!!, and I can't see the point of all the torture. Were you forced to learn all this stuff in school too?
